Sandra "Sandy" Lou (Andersen) Nash, of Paso Robles, born July 7, 1949 in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to the late Bernice and Granville Andersen of Atascadero, passed away at age 69 on Nov. 18, 2018, in Paso Robles, Calif. She was raised in Atascadero and graduated from high school in 1967. She graduated from the Cuesta College RN Program in 1976. She was a Registered Nurse at Twin Cities Community Hospital since it was first opened and later retired from Templeton Surgery Center. Richard Walter Summers

Richard Walter Summers of Atascadero passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 10. He was 86 years old. Richard was born in Nampa, Idaho, to Claire and Charlotte Summers. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Stationed in Washington, D.C., trained to instruct in leadership and hand-to-hand combat. Later, he was assigned to Arlington National Cemetery as an Assistant Chaplain. In 1953 he began his singing career with his first TV network appearance. Waldo Carminati passed away Nov. 5, 2018, at the Twin Cities hospital in Templeton. He was born Waldo Secondo Carminati on Dec. 5, 1927, to Swiss Italian immigrant parents, Arnoldo and Josephina Carminati and was the fourth of five children. Arnoldo had established a small dairy farm on North River Road in Paso Robles where Waldo spent his childhood. Growing up during the depression had a profound impression on his life. Waldo would often tell stories of his youth and how his brothers and sisters would all go to school barefoot because their family did not have enough money to buy shoes. They entered school not knowing how to speak English as his parents only spoke Swiss Italian at home.... more

Pauline Gallegos, 82, passed away Oct. 28, 2018, while battling several health issues. Pauline was born in King City, Calif., on Jan. 14, 1936. She grew up in King City where she graduated high school and then began working at a local bank. She married Manuel Gallegos in February of 1959. They initially lived in Germany before returning to the US and residing in Paso Robles. She had business ventures in Atascadero, Calif. including owning a liquor store and a t-shirt shop. Nelson “Jim” Alexander

Nelson “Jim” Alexander died at home in Atascadero, surrounded by family on Sept. 28. Nelson was born in 1934 in Yettum, Calif. One of eight children born to a sharecropper and housewife who farmed in Visalia. At a young age he moved to Los Angeles and worked for National Cash Register as a draftsman where he assisted in the drawings for the first computer and also where he met and married his wife of 62 years, Barta Jo (Holland) Alexander. In the early ‘60’s they relocated to Yucaipa, Calif., where Nelson saw an opportunity to start a small business. He cleverly designed a proprietary system and then contracted with the town to read their water meters and continued to do so until 1978 when he moved his family to Atascadero and contracted with the City of Atascadero to read their water meters. ... more

Marjorie Wells Crutchfield, 95, of Paso Robles, Calif., passed away peacefully on Oct. 7, 2018. She was at home with her son and daughter by her side. Marjorie was born on Jan. 21, 1923, in Gainesville, Fla., the daughter of Orian Pardue and Agnes Ida Lea Wells. She met the love of her life while working at the University of Florida. Cecil Meredith Crutchfield and Marjorie were married in 1942 and had three children. As Cecil’s career advanced, the family moved from Florida to Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, and finally California. Arthur Warlick Blankenship

This human dynamo was born on March 2, 1929, in Venice, Calif. under the zodiac sign of Pisces the fish. He lived up to his sign and became a great fisherman; not only of Salmonidae but of people, too. At age 89, after a long and beautiful life, the Lord called Arthur Warlick Blankenship Junior home. He died peacefully in Auburn, Calif. on Sept. 23, 2018. He was the oldest of three children born to Arthur and Senta Blankenship. Art grew up in Los Angeles when hunting rabbits was not only legal but was a necessity to put food on the table. On Aug. 14, 1947, Art married the love of his life, Betty Ann Truitt. They settled in Studio City and started a family. Richard Benitez

Richard Benitez passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 6 after a battle with thyroid cancer. Richard was born on Aug. 6, 1943, in San Bernardino, Calif. to Salbador and Concha Benitez. He grew up in Fontana, Calif. and later graduated from Fontana High School in 1961. Richard attended night school at Chaffey Community College while working several jobs and being a single parent. After graduating with an AA he transferred to Cal Poly Pomona where he met his wife, Sharon. He graduated in 1971 and then continued his education at CSU Fullerton receiving his master’s in school administration. He went on to work for Pomona, South Whittier, and Desert Sands Unified School Districts before moving to Paso Robles in 1986. Richard became the Director of Student Services in 1990. Dorothy (Dodie) Marie Stroud passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, from complications due to a decade-long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Darlene Joan Newby-Watson, PhD, age 85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018 at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo, Calif. She was born Aug. 15, 1933, in Spokane, Wash. to Harold Luther and Gladys (Caudill) Newby. She was a 1950 graduate of Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane and continued her educational pursuits which included receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1959 from Eastern Washington College of Education, a Master’s degree in Education in 1965 from the University of Washington, and in 1988 she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Neuropsychology from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. Darlene was an educator in several school districts including Falls Church, Virginia, Carmel, Paso Robles, and Atascadero, California as well as in Denton, Texas. She also evaluated and counseled children at her self-founded Atascadero Learning Center where she practiced privately as a licensed educational child psychologist and contributed to the San Luis Obispo County Probation system in this same capacity.... more

Aron Michael Thompson was born in San Luis Obispo on Dec. 28, 1975. He passed away suddenly on Aug. 31, 2018 in Chico, Calif. Aron spent his younger years in Paso Robles where he attended St. Rose Catholic School, Pleasant Valley School, Flamson Middle School and Paso Robles High School. At the age of 25 Aron moved to Portland, Ore. He loved Oregon, but the damp climate worsened his disability. After four years, he moved back to California settling in Chico. He resided in Chico for the past 13 years, struggling with disability and turmoil during that time. Georgia Pearl Vest passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family, on Sept. 9, 2018. Born in Ventura, Calif. on July 19, 1933, second of four children to Myrtle and Bill Cummins. The family moved several times, attending school in the valley and in Oxnard, where she graduated Oxnard Union High School in 1951. Eric Alexander Hanes, 35, passed away on July 28, 2018 in Fayetteville, N.C. after a three and a half year struggle with GIST cancer. He was born in October of 1982 in Los Angeles and grew up in Templeton and Paso Robles, Calif. Following graduation from Templeton High School, Eric enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a Ground Radar Systems Technician, eventually rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant. While stationed at Minot AFB, N.D., he met and married his then wife Emily Kamrowski in 2009. Eric proudly and honorably served his country with three deployments, one to Afghanistan, and while later stationed at Ramstein, Germany; he served two deployments to Africa. Jared Kirby Brush, a lifelong resident of Paso Robles, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018. Kirby was born Oct. 23, 1928, to Jared and Lenore Brush and grandson to R.C. Heaton and Walter Brush. In 1886, Heaton Hardware Store began in Paso. At the age of 14, he received a special driver's license so he could deliver furniture for the store. Kirby and Max Oak ran the store from 1955 until it closed in the early 1980s. Kirby graduated from Paso Robles High in 1947 having served as class president in both his freshman and senior years. Gilbert Hector Dekocker, a former meat business owner and butcher, passed away peacefully at his home on July 9, 2018, at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife, Jocelyn Dekocker; his daughters, Philly Dekocker and Susie Johansen; and his niece, Linda Cools. Gilbert was born in Dienze, Belgium on Jan. 26, 1934. Hugh Lynn Pitts Jr. was born on May 6, 1958, and passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at the age of 60. He suffered a heart attack while flying home from vacationing in Mexico. His last days were spent fishing with friends and enjoying life. Hugh was born in Houston, Texas, to Hugh Sr. and Aniela (Goldthwaite) Pitts. The second oldest of four children, he grew up with sister Linda and brothers, Frank and Jeff. In the early 1960’s, Hugh Sr. used his signing bonus from the Houston Oilers football team to purchase his first piece of property in East Texas. The siblings worked alongside their dad on the properties that he would purchase, improve and sell. They spent the weekends hunting and fishing. Hugh attended Cypress Fairbanks High School and studied Ag Business at Blinn Junior College. He inherited his father’s love of football and was a two-year starter for the TCU Horned Frogs, dad’s alma mater. Clifford Paul Torrey Jr. died at home Monday, June 25, 2018, surrounded by his wife, Antonia, four children, Jesse, Barbara, Austin, and Madalyn, and his daughter-in-law, Shaelah. Cliff, or Skippy, as his family called him growing up, was born in Linton, N.D. to Clifford and Evelyn. He and his five siblings, Mary Kay, Bill, Barbara, Paula, and Michele, grew up in LaMoure before the family moved to San Diego, when Clifford was 13. He attended Helix High School, where he ran cross country and forged lifelong friendships. Wayne Harris, 89, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2018. He will be remembered by many in the Paso area as the City’s downtown Santa Claus for nearly 30 years — bouncing children on his knee, and then a generation later their children. He was active on the local scene as a contributor and docent at the Pioneer Museum. One of the thrills of his life was to serve as Grand Marshal in the 2008 Pioneer Day parade. Bruce Tuley

Life long resident and pioneer Bruce Tuley was born in Paso Robles April 24, 1927, to Ray and Fay Tuley, and passed away peacefully, following a stroke, on May 18, 2018, after celebrating his 91st birthday. He was surrounded by his wife Margie and his loving family. Bruce was a fourth generation Californian and was Pioneer Day Marshal in 2012, following in the footsteps of his Grandfather Jacob Tuley, Marshal in 1940, and Grandmother Jessie Tuley, Queen in 1950. Bruce grew up on the Estrella plains near Von Dollen Road, and rode his bike to the Pleasant Valley School. A reluctant star, he once sang Red River Valley on stage, but was so shy, he stood behind the curtain as he sang. He attended Paso Robles High School excelling in all sports, and in his senior year in 1945, he met the love of his life, Margie Lee Brown. Winola moved with her family to California in 1930. In 1933 her father went to work for William Randolph Hearst in Lockwood. In 1940 her family moved to Pozo, where her father became the foreman for the J.F. Goodwin ranch, where she met her future husband John C. Hazard. They were married in 1944 in Paso Robles. After WWII they lived in San Luis Obispo, while her husband was a student at Cal Poly. In 1948 they moved to Santa Maria, where Winnie was involved with the Minerva Club. In 1954 they moved to Stockton, where she was involved with the Dameron Hospital Auxiliary, Stockton Children’s Home, Haggin Museum, and SJ County Mental Health Assoc. Walter Leighton Cook passed away in his beloved Atascadero on Aug. 1, just shy of his 94th birthday. He was born Aug. 17, 1923 to Lucien and Eulah Parks Cook, on his mother’s family farm in Tiptonville, Tenn. Shortly after birth, they went back to the Cook ranch in Magdalena, N.M. that Leighton’s grandfather had homesteaded. His grandparents also owned some property in Atascadero because his grandmother had read about E.G. Lewis’s vision of Atascadero, and in 1916 had bought some property on El Camino Real. She thought it would be a good spot for an auto campground naming it Camp Buena Vista. The name was later changed to Glen Oaks after the suggestion of author, Jack London. The first picture of Leighton in Atascadero is in 1924 sitting on the fender of a model T in front of this campground.... more
