Superintendent accepts a new assignment

ATASCADERO — Tom Butler is representing the Atascadero Greyhound Foundation/Lighthouse as their Community Star for the 2019 Dancing with Our Stars (DWOS).

Tom comments, “I am so impressed by the commitment and service to the community by the Greyhound Foundation. I greatly appreciate the fact that the Greyhound Foundation realizes that the youth of today face true challenges and is willing to step up and provide real support that allows our youth to be successful.”

The mission of the Greyhound Foundation is particularly important to Tom, who has the weighty responsibility of being the superintendent of the Atascadero Unified School District, a position he has held since 2015.

Tom is an effective leader in this important role, and a significant element in his success is the fact that he is approachable. His willingness to step forward as a Community Star attests to his accessibility, even though his dancing experience is limited to junior and senior high school dances. In fact, his fun-loving nature lends itself to the DWOS experience. His comic turn as a bicycle rider with the DWOS entry in the 2018 Colony Days Parade played a major role in that group receiving the award for the funniest entry. In addition to his school district duties, Tom is a member of Atascadero Rotary and is on the board of directors for the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.

Tom and his wife, Sarah, have six children, five sons, and a daughter — “a real Brady Bunch,” says, Tom.

He and his family love surfing and spending time at the beach, and one of his favorite ways to “get away from it all” is trout fishing in the Sierra.

He says, “I am in the process of learning to fly fish, and as an educator, it reminds me of how fun it is to learn something new.”

We suspect he is having similar fun as he practices his dance for DWOS with his partner and choreographer, the energetic and upbeat Kara Frenzel.

Tom’s lack of dance experience is balanced by Kara, a talented professional dancer. Kara is known on the international stage as a West Coast Swing champion and was recently nominated for the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame. Thanks to her extensive studies, she can dance, and teach, almost every dance medium and she offers dance classes to individuals and groups.

Every week finds her leading Tuesday Dances at the SLO Vets Hall. Kara’s first appearance with DWOS was as the unforgettable star of the production number, Material Girl, and last year, she was the choreographer for Community Star Scott Rosenblum. In return for her third year with DWOS, Kara is delighted to combine her dancing skills with a way of giving back to the community.
