Recycled material catches fire inside Waste Management truck

ATASCADERO — A Waste Management trash truck caught on fire Wednesday, April 25 at around 2:04 p.m. While the truck was at the Colony Park Community Center on  5599 Traffic Way the driver of the truck noticed the fire and called the fire department.
Two engines, one command vehicle, and a public works dump truck and tractor were dispatched along with seven fire personnel and two public works employees.
Access to the burning materials and controlling water runoff to the creek and storm drains was handle by public works who deposited sand to mitigate the runoff as the firefighters fought the fire. It took 40 minutes to control the fire.  No one was injured.
The garbage truck sustained $500 in damages. Firefighters prevented  an estimated $300,000 in damages.
The origin of the fire was the discarded recyclable material in the compartment of the truck, but the cause is undetermined.
