Firefighters responded to reports of a large grass fire near the intersection of Del Rio Road and El Camino Real at approximately 12:30 p.m. Friday. By the time fire crews arrived, the fire had spread to a stand of pine trees. El Camino Real was closed to traffic due to heavy smoke in the area and encroaching flames. The initial fire was less than an acre, but firefighters feared that the blaze could burn up to five acres of surrounding vegetation.
Fire crews were able to knock the fire down quickly and canceled an incoming crew and bulldozer. Approximately six engines responded to the fire and six nearby residences were evacuated.
