Council to look at card room ordinance, will consider removing betting limit

Posted: Friday, Aug 8th, 2014

ATASCADERO — The Atascadero City Council will consider an item at its meeting this coming Tuesday that would amend the city’s Card room ordinance to allow establishments to have six tables instead of just five and would remove a $500 limit on bets, allowing card rooms to offer unlimited betting at their discretion.

The decision is being considered after Dora Brown, owner of Outlaws Card Parlour, approached the council and asked them to consider the changes in late 2013. Brown expressed concern that the limits in the ordinance keep her from remaining competitive with the card room in Paso Robles, which doesn’t operate under similar limits.

“Outlaws competes for the casual poker player every day,” Brown wrote in a letter to the council dated Nov. 12, 2013. “We must provide our customers the best overall poker playing experience in order to compete directly with the card room in Paso Robles. Our customer service, and providing those items our customers want is all that really separates us from that direct competition in Paso Robles.”
