Incoming athletic director on a crusade

Posted: Friday, Jul 11th, 2014

ATASCADERO — After a year with only a couple sports taking the field, the North County Christian School administration is on a crusade to bring back a robust schedule of sports teams and games. With a new administrator in Danielle Boldt, and a new athletic director, Kellie Bergquist, the Crusaders have a renewed sense of purpose, and are working against fast-approaching deadlines.

“I have been there for 14 years, and I had an interest in being the athletic director,” Bergquist said, “and I think my relationship with the kids will help, and I hope I can take them one step further. I will be seeking every avenue for support.”

In 2013, the Crusaders fielded a stellar varsity girls volleyball team, coached by Doug Harbottle, and things look set for another great season this fall.

Where NCCS lacked in the 2013-14 seasons, was in boys’ athletics. So getting an 8-man football team back on the field is an obstacle that Bergquist is taking head on.

Currently, the Crusaders have seven players, coached by Bryan Matherly, and they are in need of a few more interested athletes to join the school and the team. Matherly’s experience includes coaching at Templeton High School for six years.

“My philosophy is that football has to be fun,” Matherly said. “It carries memories throughout the rest of your life. At the high school level there is great emphasis on winning, but there is so much more to it. There is so much more you can learn from it. You need to learn to work with people whether you like it or not. You have to learn to win good, and you have to learn to lose good.”
