Eagles land in semifinal round of Firecracker

Posted: Tuesday, Jul 8th, 2014

Nicholas Mattson/Atascadero News Templeton High School summer baseball pitcher Mateo D’Alfonso, just after taking a line-drive to the bicep of his throwing arm, recovers to pick up the baseball and throw the runner out at first base in Sunday’s semifinal game against Clovis High School. The Eagles lost the game, 8-7.

TEMPLETON — Without help from talented pitchers Spencer Howard and Mac Lardner, the Templeton High School baseball team took the field to win the first three games of the annual Firecracker tournament to earn a semifinal game against Clovis on Sunday.

Howard graduated last year, earning the title of North County Baseball Player of the Year, and a spot on the Cal Poly Mustangs club baseball team next year. Lardner will be a senior at THS next year, but was not utilized because he was fresh off a showcase where he pitched in Fullerton on Thursday for scouts. THS head coach Brad Macomber related that if the Eagles made the finals, it was possible that Lardner would take the mound.

“To get through and do what we did,” Macomber said, “without Howard and Lardner, who were our leaders last year, that’s encouraging.”

So, largely, the Eagles played through the Firecracker tournament without the two players that led them into CIF last year. Despite that, Templeton came within a run of meeting Paso Robles High School in the championship game in what would have been a North County showdown.

Another piece to the Templeton team was also sidelined. Clay Villars was dressed in street clothes with his arm in a sling, cheering on the team. With Villars out, Macomber had to move someone else into the catcher position, and had to deal with another missing piece.

Templeton played out of pool “B” — winning the pool over Righetti, El Diamante, Salinas, Buhach Colony, and Monache high schools.
