ATASCADERO — The Atascadero youth basketball summer league began on Monday and first, second, and third grade division, and the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade division took the court at Colony Park Community Center for an evening of basketball.
A total of 19 teams are members of the summer league, from all grade levels between first and 12th, and the games are played each evening from Monday through Thursday until late July.
On Monday, the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade Spurs hosted the Lakers in a spirited game that played back and forth, until the fourth quarter when the Spurs took control to land the first win of the season.
Halfway through the first quarter, the Spurs took a 6-2 lead, but the Lakers came back to tie it up in the final 3:00. The second quarter began with the Spurs and Lakers even at 6-6.
The Lakers made a basket to pull ahead, 8-6, but the Spurs quickly tied the game again with a field goal by Khrystina Valdez.
The Lakers Ava Wendorff drove the lane for a floater to bust the knot and give the Lakers a 10-8 lead.
Scoring stood still for the next 1:30, until Gabriel Carroll nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing to add to the Lakers’ lead, 13-8.
The quick hands and sharp dribbling of Keanu Deleon-Michael finished with a jumper from the key to close the gap to 13-10 with 6:34 remaining in the second quarter.
Riley Coalwell joined the Spurs to help them field five players because a few players were not present at the first game. Coalwell was a strong player that helped the Spurs surge ahead for the late game lead. At the 6:00 mark in the second quarter, Coalwell led the fast break for a layup to bring the Spurs within 13-12.
