TEMPLETON — On May 22, at the annual Evening for the Stars, three Templeton High School seniors were named Athletes of the Year before graduating together as Eagles. Mari Stewart, Autumn Russell and Will Mehring received the award for their play on the courts of the THS gymnasium in 2013-14, and now each spreads their wings to fly off to higher educations, and higher levels of competition.
Stewart, Russell and Mehring all carry similar qualities that make them formidable opponents on the court, and a joy to be around off the court. Between the three of them, records were set at THS, and being named as Athletes of the Year together sets the bar even higher. It was the first time that more than two athletes have received the honor, but it would be hard to argue against the decision.
“These three athletes have strived for greatness and have achieved it,” said THS athletic director Paul Jones. “I am so proud of all three of them and wish them all luck in college — the teams that you will be joining are lucky to have you.”
They each have a highly competitive spirit that infuses their athletic ability with a spark that carried each of their teams to great heights.
Stewart and Russell each earned high honors as teammates on Templeton’s varsity volleyball and basketball teams. Both teams earned bids to the CIF postseason, with the basketball team running the table for an undefeated Los Padres League title.
