Nicholas Mattson/Atascadero News North County Indians first baseman Davey Casciola makes the final out of Tuesday’s game against the Valley Bears.

TEMPLETON — The North County Indians split games on the road against the Bakersfield Braves on Wednesday in Bakersfield, dropping the first game, 4-2, before roaring back for a 6-0 shutout.

“I don’t mind losing,” North County head coach Dan Marple said, “as long as you learn something.”

In game one, the Braves led 4-0, before Indians catcher Nate Javine dealt North County’s only two runs on a ninth-inning home run — batting in Andy Garretson.

The scores brought the Indians within 4-2 of the Braves, but two consecutive fly outs delivered the Indians their sixth loss of the season.

North County pitcher Spencer Howard dominated the Braves for three innings to close the game, but the Indians could not find the ball against the Braves pitchers. Howard allowed one hit and no runs.

The Indians were outhit, 7-4, and were struck out eight times. Javine was the chief contributor for the Indians, going 1 for 1, with two RBI on the home run.

Bouncing back in the second game against Bakersfield, the Indians posted 11 hits, with only three strikeouts, to earn a 6-0 win.

The Indians took the lead in the top of the second inning. Facing two outs, with Ben Polshuk on first, Javine singled to left field with a hard grounder. Loading the bases, Christian Priore walked, then the Braves gift-wrapped the first run of the game when the Valley pitcher hit Sinjin Todd with a pitch to force the score.
