Relay for Life starts Saturday: Local teen to speak about mother's struggle

Posted: Friday, Apr 25th, 2014

Relay for Life participants, from left to right, Drew Daner, Haddie Daner and Tori Schamber hold luminaries decorated by the Atascadero Police Department Association Arresting Cancer team during a team captain meeting at Daner Law Firm Wednesday.

Sarah Mete watched her headstrong and confident mother, Deanna, rise above cancer. The life-changing journey left a lasting impression the 17-year-old Atascadero High School senior, who will give a speech about her experience during the Atascadero Relay for Life Luminaria Ceremony, slated for 8 p.m. at Sunken Gardens on Saturday, April 26.

Surrounded by flickering paper bags decorated by loved ones, friends and community members touched by cancer, the 17-year-old Atascadero High School senior will remember her late mom, who battled re-occurring bouts of the disease.

“She never missed a day of work with radiation and chemotherapy, except for the day of the surgery,” said Mete, who was in sixth grade during her mother’s first breast cancer diagnosis. “You’re supposed to take it easy after the surgery, but that is just not my mom. Almost immediately after the surgery, she ran the Wildflower Marathon.”
