City’s ‘community cats’ get attention

Posted: Friday, Jan 24th, 2014

Luke Phillips/Atascadero News More than 100 cats inhabit the greater Atascadero Creek region, and North County Paws Cause is taking on the job of getting them all spayed or neutered and vaccinated against rabies.

ATASCADERO — More than 100 cats fill the Atascadero Creek and surrounding area, homeless from birth or dumped by the people with whom they once lived, but if the community pulls together, their story can be a happy one.

North County Paws Cause is dedicated to reducing the homeless cat population—humanely. They call their effort the Creek Cats Project.

“Number one is spay and neuter as close to 100 percent of the cats as possible,” said Cathy Enns of North County Paws Cause. “Number two, establish feeding stations in areas with a high concentration of cats to reduce the trash left behind from feeding; and the third aspect of the project is arguably the most important. That is ongoing monitoring of the cats.”

Enns said her all-volunteer group first estimated there to be in the neighborhood of 100 cats then later realized there was closer to 120. Cats reproduce rapidly, usually at least two litters a year with 4-5 kittens per litter. With this winter’s warmer weather, the number of births is likely to grow.

“This year, we’re all worried because this year it’s been so warm, so we believe kitten season is going to be earlier than usual, and earlier means more often,” Enns said. “TNR is the term we use—trap neuter return. The practice is to alter, give a rabies shot, and tip the ear, so the community can rest assured.”
