Lifelong resident of Atascadero, Katharine Louise Cornelius Lickers, 89, entered into eternal peace on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton.
Katharine was born in Atascadero on July 24, 1924, the fourth daughter of James and Elsa Cornelius. She graduated from Atascadero High School in 1942 and soon after assumed the responsibility of the family real estate and insurance agency. She sold many area ranches and proprieties during her 15-plus years working in the local real estate market.
She married the love of her life, Thomas Lickers, in 1955, and together they raised their five daughters.
She devoted nearly 40 years of employment to caring for the senior population. Her focus was on home care and providing the support and assistance that allowed clients to remain independent and at home. She was always the nurturer; mindful of everyone’s comfort and wellbeing. She was the spiritual guide and counselor for her family and extended family, secure in her faith and her devotion to others. All this she did, never forgetting a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion with a “little remembrance” that was beautifully wrapped and a card with a heartfelt personal note. Nothing was ever a problem as she offered precious gifts of love, caring and sharing.
Katharine was an accomplished writer. She had numerous short stories and poems published. In 1994, she was awarded a charter life membership in the International Society of Poets. This recognition was limited to 100 individuals worldwide.
Katharine was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Thomas Lickers, her siblings, Jane Lehmann, Barbara McKnight, Eleanor Becker and James Cornelius, and her nephew, Robert McKnight.
Katharine is survived by her five daughters and sons-in law, Margaret and Hugh Laughlin, Kathleen and Larry Pensinger, Susan and Michael Barry, Lynette and John Carlson and Eleanor and Joseph Iffert, her grandchildren, Robert Hall, Thomas Laughlin, Tyler Wittstrom, Nicholas Carlson, Katharine Barry, Joseph Iffert, Paul Pensinger and Michaela Iffert, her great-granddaughter, Baylee Hall, her sister-in-law, Beverly Cornelius, nieces, Karla Fisher, Claudia McKnight, Barbara Nanna and Judith Hunt, nephews, Don McKnight, Dr. Michael Becker, Jack Becker and Rodney Cornelius.
A celebration of life service and reception which will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 2600 Ramona Road in Atascadero. Condolences may be left in Katharine’s online guestbook at www.chapeloftherosesatascadero.com. Chapel of the Roses can be contacted with questions by calling 466-1161.

“When I Think of You”
By Katharine C. Lickers
Special words come to mind
When I Think of You
First Appreciation, for all you say and all you do.
Next Integrity best describes your Skill and Dedication
Yes there are many ways you spark my Admiration.
When the case load looms long and you’re getting Weary
There are no Complaints; why you’re even cheery!
When Compassion speaks of your softer side
You muster Faith, Hope, Love, and Caring as a Guide
You meet Adversity with Courage and Grace
While your taste for Fun and Zany Humor brings a smile to every face.
It has been a Remarkable Run and before this message ends
I’ll add one more cherished Thought.
I’m richly Blessed because we’re Friends.
