ATASCADERO — The Atascadero City Council took steps recently to support the police in creating a smoke-free “safe corridor” for youth and adults in and around Sunken Gardens.
The council voted 5-0 in favor of a smoking ordinance amendment that expands the already-existing smoking ban in city parks by 100 feet around Sunken Gardens.
“In 2009, Atascadero banned smoking in our city parks,” Atascadero Police Commander Joe Allen told the council. “In all honesty, after that, all smoking has ceased in Sunken Gardens park for the most part. The unintended consequences, as a result of that smoking ban, it migrated other smokers to the area just outside the Sunken Gardens park.”
Those areas include businesses that surround Sunken Gardens. For the complete article see the 11-29-2013 issue.
