The eagleís wing is broken

Recently, Iíve been asked to provide threat briefings on national security to various groups. My focus has been the effect of the federal budget sequester, which takes 50 percent of its cuts from the military regardless of impact. The impact has been severe with military readiness in free-fall.

Growing up on military bases in the Cold War with the deafening roar of jet engines from heavy bombers going on alert seared into my memory, Iíve seen the armed forces expand to a formidable force and razor-edge efficiency. Iíve seen that same force repeatedly gutted by whimsical budget axes wielded by congress and a public indifferent to the dangers posed by a dangerous world. Each time America contracted its armed forces and pulled back to enjoy the chimera of peace, it was brutally awakened by the savagery of the outside world.
