ATASCADERO — The issue was whether or not the city of Atascadero would rent the historic Rotunda Building for private events, — a 4-0 vote decided it will — but it was the city council’s process of discussion that stood out.
City Attorney Brian Pierik advised that Mayor Tom O’Malley step down during discussion of the Rotunda’s event use since he owns a competing business, Portola Inn. O’Malley quipped, “I’m so honored that the city attorney would think we would be, in any way, competition to this building,” he said before removing himself from discussion.
