Posted: Tuesday, Oct 8th, 2013

Paula McCambridge/Atascadero News Alice Baker-Taber of Atascadero, left, brought her pup, Wookie, to St. Luke’s for a blessing by Father Matt Conrad during a special service Sunday. Second photo: Olive, back, and Annie came for their blessing. Olive has had her hind end paralyzed for five years.

Nineteen dogs, two cats, two ponies and a chicken were blessed during a very special service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Atascadero Sunday.

“This is to remind ourselves that humankind isn’t the top of the pyramid … we share the world … We are not the rulers of creation; we’re the stewards of creation,” said Father Matt Conrad. “It gets chaotic, but that’s how creation is. We need to learn to live with that and not try so often to change it.”

St. Luke’s holds this yearly blessing on the Sunday closest St. Francis of Assisi’s Feast Day. Francis lived from the late 12th century into the early thirteenth century. He was noted for his joy in creation and celebration of all creatures.
