ATASCADERO — A transformer failure left stoplights dead and 2,305 customers without electrical power this morning.
At 7:26 a.m., a transformer failed at San Benito and El Camino Real, which left customers without power in the city’s downtown district, said PG&E Spokesman Blair Jones.
By 8:45 a.m., about 1,000 customers had power restored. By 9:25 a.m., all but 752 households had power with all electricity back in business by 10:47 a.m.
Transformers take high-voltage electricity and lower that voltage so it’s a usable power level to supply to homes and businesses, Jones said.
“So if you have a situation where one of the transformers loses power then you have an outage related to that,” he said. “Then our crews respond and start rerouting power through other sources.”
