AFD is ready for, hopes to delay, fire season

ATASCADERO — Fire season is well and truly upon us, and Atascadero City Fire Department is geared up and ready to battle the inevitable blazes.

Fire Capt. Bill White said that AFD gears up for the season a couple of different ways.

First, he said, in the off-season each firehouse staffs three crewmembers per shift. That is enough to get a Class 1 fire engine to an emergency in town. A class 1 fire engine is the one that everybody thinks of when they think “fire engine.” White said they are the most diverse engine and, thus, the most frequently used. They can handle structure fires, wildland fires, medical emergencies and plenty of things in between.
