ATASCADERO — Esther (Byrne) Engles, 102, of Atascadero peacefully passed into her next life with the Lord on Feb. 21, 2013, surrounded by her family.
Esther was born in 1910 in Kansas City, Mo. In 1942 she traveled by train with her 7-year-old son, and they began a new life in California. Esther said that she was not nervous about embarking on such a long trip and her son, Michael, remembers all the soldiers in uniform offering to give up their seats to the mother and youngster, “I think because she was so pretty,” Michael recalls.
Esther worked for many years as a bookkeeper for Firestone Corp. in Los Angeles. In fact she was never without a job, sometimes two. She remarried and rounded out her family with another son, Joseph, and daughters, Kathleen and Anne.
In 2000, Esther moved from Pasadena to the Christian Home in Atascadero to be nearer family members. For 11 happy years she enjoyed and treasured her many friends there.
Throughout her long life, Esther was blessed with good health. In fact she danced with family members at the Madonna Inn on her 100th birthday.
Esther attributed her long life to attending weekly Mass and voting for Democrats.
Esther is survived by three children, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Her local family includes son, Michael Byrne (Charlotte) of Atascadero; grandchildren, Kevin Byrne (Nadja) of San Miguel, Chris Byrne (Deanna) of Arroyo Grande and Greg Byrne (Tran) of Honolulu, Hawaii; and great-grandchildren, Josh Byrne and Natalie Byrne of Atascadero and Jennifer Byrne and Brendan Byrne of Arroyo Grande.
A funeral Mass will be said for Esther on Wednesday, March 6 at 8:30 p.m. in the morning at St. William’s Catholic Church in Atascadero with a reception to follow in the Parrish Hall.
