Friday, March 1

Global Alliance for Balance and Healing will provide free sessions of light and tone on March 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Santa Margarita Community Hall, on the corner of I and Murphy streets. Saturday, March 2

The Atascadero Community Band will hold its winter concert, “How Suite It Is” on March 2 at noon at Crossroads North County Church, 9685 Morro Road in Atascadero. The concert is free, although all proceeds from the concert will benefit the Arts for Living program. For more information, go to www.atascaderoband.org.



North County Dachshund Club meets on the first Saturday of each month at Vineyard Dog Park in Templeton from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The group is made up of dachshund lovers/owners who get together and let us and their dachshunds meet new friends. Those interested may email tmckibben95@gmail.com. There is no cost to join the group; however, it costs $1 to access the dog park.



The Atascadero Historical Society will hold its annual dinner on March 2 to celebrate E.G. Lewis’ 144th birthday. Because 2013 is the city’s centennial, the dinner will also celebrate the city’s anniversary. The society will also vote on board vacancies and positions open on the board of directors. The event starts at 5 p.m. and will end at 9 p.m. and will be held at the Atascadero Elks Lodge, 1516 El Camino Real. The meal will be prepared by the Elks BBQ Crew and will be boneless chicken with all the sides. Each dinner is a $20 donation per society member and a $25 donation per nonmember. Sunshine the red-tailed hawk will be at Atascadero artist Nancy Koren’s art reception from 3 to 5 p.m. on March 2 at Envisions Gallery, 5975 Traffic Way. For more information, call the gallery at 466-5850. Families are encouraged to attend this free event.



Monday, March 4

The Spiritual and Inspirational Poetry Group has poetry readings and discussion the first Monday of the month at 9:15 a.m. at different convalescent homes and other facilities. For more information, call 466-3209.



Tuesday, March 5

The Atascadero Planning Commission will hold its regular meeting on first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m. at Atascadero City Hall in Council Chambers. For more information or to view the agenda, go to www.atascadero.org. The meeting is also aired live KPRL AM1230.



The Atascadero Unified School District Board of Trustees will meet on first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7 p.m. in the district office at 5601 West Mall. The official board agenda is available at the district office or on its website, www.atasusd.org.

Wednesday, March 6

The San Luis Obispo County Four-Wheel Drive Club, a San Luis Obispo County-based organization of off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, will meet at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at A-Town Deli, 7600 El Camino Real Ste. 5 in Atascadero. A food distribution is held at the Atascadero Grange Hall, 5035 Palma Ave., for any aged person on the first Wednesday of each month from 10:30 a.m. to noon. To qualify one person must have a monthly income of $1,381 or less, for two persons $1,839 and progressively higher for three and more.



North County Newcomers Club is open to all residents who have lived in the North County for two years or less. Thursday, March 7

The students of the Atascadero Fine Arts Academy will present “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” on March 7 at 7 p.m., Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. This kid-friendly version of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale will surely delight people of any age with its songs and familiar story. Performances will be held at the Atascadero Junior High School Baro Theatre at 6501 Lewis Ave. in Atascadero. Tickets are available through the Fine Arts Academy office or at the door just before each performance. General admission is $7 and children 5 and under are $4.



The San Luis Obispo Chapter of the California Native Plant Society will hold its annual North County meeting at the Atascadero library on March 7 at 7 p.m. Special guest speaker Bruce Delgado, botanist at the Fort Ord National Monument, Bureau of Land Management, will present “The Flora and Fauna of Fort Ord” with special attention to management and restoration issues. Learn how these issues can be applied locally. The talk is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Arrive early. Atascadero library, 6850 Morro Road in Atascadero. Saturday, March 9

The Paddock Players presents puppet shows at the Charles Paddock Zoo the second Saturday of each month at 11 a.m., as weather permits. The shows feature animal tales that include fuzzy, furry and feathered puppets. The puppet shows are free with zoo admission.



Eva Inglizian, a California licensed acupuncturist and herbalist, will host community Acu-Detox sessions as a benefit for Global Alliance for Balance and Healing on March 9. Detox sessions are scheduled on the hour each hour from 9 a.m. to noon at the Global Alliance Cultural Center of Light and Learning, 22720 El Camino Real, Ste. C in Santa Margarita. The fee for each session is $40 with a percentage of the proceeds donated to Global Alliance. Space is limited to 10 participants per hour session. Tuesday, March 12

The Atascadero City Council will hold its regular meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6 p.m. in the Atascadero City Hall Council Chambers. For more information, call 461-5000 or go to www.atascadero.org. The meeting can be viewed on the city’s website, on Charter Cable Channel 20 or on KPRL AM1230. Council meetings will be rebroadcast on Charter Cable Channel 20 at 1, 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. following the meeting.



Wednesday, March 13

S.T.E.P.S. Bucks, a program of the Atascadero Unified School District special education department, will open its coffee shop at 6495 Lewis Ave. on March 13 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The profits made from the coffee shop benefit the program.



The Atascadero Optimist Club is a service based nonprofit organization that meets every second and fourth Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Coco’s. For more information, call 466-9822.



The Memoirs Writing Group meets the second and third Wednesday of every month. This group is dedicated to writing memoirs but other writing may also be included. The group will meet at 10 a.m. in the building behind the Berean Church, 9325 El Bordo Ave. Those who are interested in writing, sharing ideas about writing or just like to listen are welcome to. Thursday, March 14

The Atascadero library will host a program about the Avila Beach Sea Life Center: Microscope Lab Outreach Program on March 14 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for those 6 and older. Space is limited and signups are required. Jessica Ferrentino, program director of the Sea Life Center in Avila Beach, will set up microscopes with marine specimens.



Twin Cities Community Hospital holds prenatal breastfeeding on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Founder’s Pavilion, 1100 Las Tablas Road in Templeton. All classes are free.



The Atascadero Fun Club hosts a free Movie at the Pavilion on the second Thursday of each month in the Community Room. On March 14, “The Descendants” will be shown. The movie will start at 10 a.m. All county residents 50 and older are invited to attend. For more information, call 674-7092.



Templeton Unified School District Board of Trustees will meet on the second and fourth Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Templeton Middle School Band Room at 925 Old County Road, Templeton. Atascadero Main Street will host a mixer on March 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Envisions Gallery, 5975 Traffic Way in Atascadero. There will be wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Atascadero Loaves & Fishes.



Saturday, March 16

The Atascadero High School’s Sober Grad Night Committee will hold its annual fundraiser. “Luck of the Irish” Casino Night on March 16 at the Best Western Colony Inn in Atascadero. All proceeds will help fund a “Safe and Sober Grad Night” for the Atascadero High School graduating class of 2013.



Sunday, March 17

The Creston Women’s Club will host its annual International dinner — all-you-can-eat buffet, at the Creston Elementary School Multipurpose room, 5105 O’Donovan Road in Creston on March 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. All proceeds will go to the scholarship fund benefiting Creston area residents. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children and must be pre-purchased, available through any Creston Women’s Club member. Call Ann Spencer at 438-3543 with any questions.



Monday, March 18

The University of California Cooperative Extension’s Natural Resource and Watershed Advisor Royce Larsen will host an E. coli workshop on March 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Hall in Templeton, 805 South Main St. University of California food safety, pathogen, and watershed specialists, along with industry representatives, will present the results of recent research projects that looked at E. coli in cattle, wildlife, and the environment.
