An apple for the students

Creig P. Sherburne/Atascadero News • Retired Cal Poly agriculture instructor Joe Sabol explains to Jill-Anna Myers’ sixth-grade class what a “scion” is and how it will be grafted onto a new apple tree root.

ATASCADERO — San Gabriel Road Elementary School sixth-graders got a sweet treat on Friday. They built their own apple trees. The two sixth-grade classes were visited by the California Rare Fruit Growers Association’s Central Coast chapter — a group led by retired Cal Poly agriculture instructor Joe Sabol, who led the classes through the grafting process.
