Fred Nick obituary

Posted: Monday, Feb 11th, 2013

POZO — Fred L. Nick, 80, of Pozo, died on Jan. 30, 2013, at his ranch.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1932, in San Luis Obispo to Jerome T. and Margaret M. Nick. Fred attended school in Pozo and San Luis Obispo, graduating from Atascadero High School and Cal Poly.

He was a school board trustee for six years as education was a real passion. While his family was growing, he worked on the family ranch raising cattle and selling firewood, which was the start of Nick’s Firewood.

He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, PG&E, and for Cal Farm Insurance. Growing up he was active in 4-H and FFA, and exhibited grand champion steer at the San Luis Obispo County Fair. Nick Brangus Ranch has had high selling bulls in many elite sales and exhibited the grand and reserve champion bull at the Red Bluff Bull Sale. Recently, Fred had begun a grass fed beef business; selling USDA-inspected beef to the public and was the first livestock producer to become certified organic in San Luis Obispo County.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Fred is survived by his wife, Donna I. Nick of 58 years; his children, Juanell Hepburn (Dave), Norman Nick (Lorie) and Wayne Nick (Michelle); grandchildren, Adell, Johnnie, Jessy, Brandon, Lacy, Gary, Morgan, Casey and Christy; great-grandchildren, Codi, Cameron, Chloe and Caden.

A remembrance gathering will be held at a later date.
