Nicholas Marquart Jr. obituary

Posted: Monday, Feb 11th, 2013

TEMPLETON — Nicholas Andrew Marquart Jr., 66, of Templeton died at home with his family by his side on Jan. 15, 2013, after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born in Atascadero, the son of Nicholas Sr. and Irene Marquart. He attended Templeton public schools and later Fresno State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in criminology. In 1970 he was married to the former Kathleen Smith at the Main Chapel on Treasure Island in San Francisco. They have three sons.

Nick began his career in law enforcement in Berkeley in 1969 and soon after returned to the Central Coast and the family ranch and began work with the Paso Robles Police Department. He then transferred to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department where he was employed for 30 years, before retiring in 2005. Nick rose through the ranks of the Sheriff’s department holding the rank of chief deputy for many years.

Nick was a lifelong supporter of all things Templeton. He and his wife spent countless hours with their sons volunteering with the Templeton 4-H Club, including being community leader and the Templeton High School Boosters. Nick was also active in the Templeton Area Advisory Group where he served as president twice, as well as other advisory committees to the Board of Supervisors. Nick participated in and supported POPR and COLAB. His time riding with the Paso Robles Trail Riders and fishing in Alaska were among his favorite downtime activities.

Nick took great pride in continuing running the family cattle ranch that his great-grandfather homesteaded in the late 1870s. Nick worked the ranch with his father until he retired from law enforcement at which time he took over running the operation. Nick’s sons and grandchildren are the fifth- and sixth-generation of Marquarts to experience this phenomenal ranching legacy.

He was preceded in death by his son, Nicholas A. Marquart III; his father, Nicholas A. Marquart Sr.; and his grandson, Harrison Marquart.

He leaves his beloved wife, Kathy; his son, Nate (Anne) of Paso Robles; his son, Ben of Templeton, his son, Jake (Sarah) of Templeton; his grandchildren, Emma, Austin, Ember and Orrin; mother, Irene Marquart of Templeton; sister, Nancy Otto (Franz Kahout) of San Rafael; sister, Lucille Milani (Ray) of Atwater; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 21, 2013, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 295 Old County Road, Templeton. A reception will follow at the Paso Robles Events Center at 11:30 a.m. Memorial gifts in Nick’s memory may be made to the Nicholas Andrew Marquar, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund at any Rabobank location.

Arrangements are being handled by Keuhl-Nicolay Funeral Home, Paso Robles.
