SAN LUIS OBISPO ó Selma Burwasser Belenky, 96, passed away peacefully at the Bella Vista Transitional Care Center in San Luis Obispo on Dec. 17, 2012.
Selma was born in Montreal, Quebec, and grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. A 1937 graduate of Flora Stone Mather College of Case Western Reserve University, she moved to New York City in 1938 and successfully pursued two separate careers in music sales†and in copywriting at Harperís Bazaar and Glamour magazines.†In her 40s she returned to graduate school and pursued a degree in social work at Columbia. Thereafter she had a long and fruitful career as a social worker and psychotherapist in New York City.
Selma was preceded in death by her two brothers, Dr. Philip Burwasser and Joseph Burwasser, and her parents, Rosa Maria Mendelsohn Burwasser and Harry Burwasser.
She was the cherished mother of Katrin Belenky of La Jolla, (formerly of Atascadero). Selma is also survived by Katrinís husband, Samuel Peck; Katrinís daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Adam Schanzer, and their five children of Jerusalem, Israel, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
She had a vibrant spirit, superior intelligence, deep love for her family and a lot of class. She was an incredibly loving mother, aunt, great-aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother.
A memorial service for Selma is being planned for early April 2013 at the New York Society for Ethical Culture in New York City.
