SAN MIGUEL — Richard Alan “Rick” Calkins, 55 died on Nov. 3, 2012, with his family by his side.
He was born in San Luis Obispo and lived the majority of his life in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. He graduated from Santa Ynez Valley Union High School in 1975 and began his career with CAL FIRE in 1974 as a seasonal firefighter.
After retiring from a long career with CAL FIRE, Rick went to work for Black Timber Wildfire Company. He most recently worked as a wildland firefighter for UniEngine, also known as “klump pump.” Rick loved ocean fishing, hunting and being outdoors. Most of all, he loved his family and friends.
Rick is survived by his parents, Richard G. “Dick” and Joyce Calkins of San Miguel; sister, Kelly Bungarz (Doug) of Atascadero; daughters, Heidie Haskell, and her fiance, Kevin Binger, and Heather Duditch (David) of El Cajon; grandsons, Julien Hinds and Zachary Binger of Atascadero; nephew, Jake Murch and girlfriend, Tracey LoSchiavo of Atascadero. He also leaves behind a large extended family and many close friends.
A celebration of Rick’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1 at “Deer Camp” in Pozo with a barbecue to follow. R.S.V.P to Doug Bungarz at firstname.lastname@example.org by Nov. 20.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Rick Calkin’s grandchildren’s fund at any Mission Community Bank.
