Myra ‘Katy’ Hutt obituary

Posted: Monday, Feb 11th, 2013

ATASCADERO — Myra Kathryn “Katy” (Sims) Hutt, 83, of Atascadero died on Oct. 25, 2012, due to complications of a fall.

Katy was born Nov. 21, 1928, the youngest child of Benjamin Cleveland Hutt and Hazel Capitola Austin, homesteaders on a farm near Broken Bow, Neb. She grew up during the hard Dust Bowl years, riding her old horse, Tony, to school and pestering her older sister and brothers.

In the early 1940s, the family migrated to California and eventually settled in Paso Robles. Katy graduated high school in 1947. By 1951 she had met and married another graduate of Paso Robles High, Harold Sims Jr.

After Harold’s time in the service, Katy and Harold bought a home and a filling station in San Miguel and their four children were born in quick succession. Later they moved to Templeton and then to Atascadero, where they have lived since 1968.

Throughout her adult life, Katy was a loving, resourceful and energetic wife and mother. Her family remembers the huge piles of bread she used to bake, the many happy visits to the library, the hikes and bike rides she took them on and the time she saved the house from burning down by climbing into the attic with a glass of water to pour on a red hot chimney pipe. She gave her children a great love of books and reading, a sure sense of being loved and a playful way of looking at the world.

In addition to her family, Katy loved small dogs, riding her bike, working in the yard, and the color red. For many years she and her three-wheeled cycle were a familiar sight on the streets of Atascadero. She was a long-time enthusiastic member of the Atascadero Grandmother’s Club.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Harold F. Sims Jr.; her children, Kathy Hansen of Santa Margarita, Karen Sims of Atascadero, Barbara and Wayne Elsea of Santa Margarita and Harold Sims III of Atascadero; and her grandchildren, Helen and Brian Herbeck and Clovas Hansen and Gina Schleif.

Her life will be celebrated at a small graveside service at the cemetery in Paso Robles. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of the Atascadero library. Go to www.chapeloftherosesatascadero.com for more information on Katy.
