Candidate’s family involved in auto accident

SANTA MARIA — Abel Maldonado’s wife and son were involved in an automobile accident on Monday, July 23 in Santa Maria, a press release issued by Maldonado said. The Maldonados checked out OK, but the driver of the other vehicle, a 31-year-old man in a Honda Accord, died.

Maldonado is running for California’s new 24th congressional district, which includes Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County.

According to the California Highway Patrol’s report on the incident, the 31-year-old man did not make a complete stop at the intersection of Dominion Road at Foxcon Canyon Road. Instead, he drove directly into the path of the Maldonado vehicle, which ran right into the driver’s side of the Honda. The driver was pronounced dead on-scene.
