ATASCADERO — The Central Coast Children’s Classic is back again this year. Taking place on Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Mayor Pro Tem Tom O’Malley’s Portola Inn, the event promises to be full of all the whimsy and fun of the first, but with more hands-on activities for the young and inquiring minds sure to attend.
Friends of the Library President Grenda Ernst said that among the new attractions will be a professional story teller on scene to regale the regal youngsters and animals and handlers from Zoo to You.
“Also new is a Chumash Indian village,” Ernst said.
Members of the Chumash tribe will create a small village and teach kids to make necklaces using the tools and materials their forebears did.
And that’s just the new stuff. Last year featured a Pirates Cove treasure hunt, a partial performance of Velveteen Rabbit by the SLO Ballet Theatre, a real-live blacksmith’s shop and puppet shows by the Paddock Players — among other things, all staffed by storybook characters as played by community members. Last year, for instance, Children’s Librarian Joan Bloomfield dressed up splendidly as Fancy Nancy, horrible parasol and all.
Cold Stone Creamery ice cream will be on-hand, and a picnic lunch is included with entry. Children are $15 each and adults are $25. All money earned benefits the Friends of the Library. For more information, go to www.atascaderofriendsofthelibrary.org or www.portolainn.com. Tickets are also available at the library itself.
