AUSD selects next superintendent

Posted: Friday, Jun 10th, 2011

Creig P. Sherburne/Atascadero News Superintendent John Rogers and superintendent-to-be Dr. Deborah Bowers stand together shortly after school board president George Galvan announced Bowers would be Atascadero Unified School District’s next superintendent.

The Atascadero Unified School District Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Deborah Bowers to be the district’s next superintendent starting July 1.

George Galvan, president of the AUSD school board, made the announcement at the board meeting on June 7. Bowers will replace John Rogers, who is retiring from the district after serving as superintendent for the past five years.

Bowers is currently the principal at Santa Margarita and Creston elementary schools, and served as superintendent for the Templeton Unified School District from 2006 to 2010. Bowers was also an elementary school principal in Templeton, a teacher and reading specialist for thirteen years in the Savanna school district in Anaheim, and a primary grade teacher in the Beardsley school district in Bakersfield for six years. Bowers has a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from California State University, Bakersfield and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Southern California.

“[The school board] selected an excellent candidate for the position. Dr. Bowers brings a depth of knowledge and curriculum that will benefit the students of the [Atascadero Unified School] District,” said current Superintendent Rogers.

Tami Gunther agreed.

“We all really like her and think she’ll be great for the district,” she said.

Dr. Bowers’ salary will be $141,135, and the contract is for a term of three years. Rogers’ salary was $141,000. The district received 30 applications for the position and interviewed four finalists. The board is expected to approve the employment contract at its meeting on Tuesday, June 28. The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education assisted the board in the search process.
