Get the word out! Submit local events for the community calendar. Submit a short description of your club, business or organization’s event. Events must either be free to attend or benefit a nonprofit organization.



Wednesday, July 4

The Atascadero Fourth of July celebration will be held at Atascadero Lake Park on July 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The day will start with three fun runs — 5K, 10K and one mile — and a pancake breakfast by the Lion’s Club. The day will include lunch and dinner for sale, old-fashioned games, live music, free admission to the zoo and wading pool, and more. For more information, go to www.visitatascadero.com.



Templeton’s annual Independence Day Parade, sponsored by the Templeton Kiwanis Club, will be held on July 4 at 10 a.m. and will run along Main Street. After the parade, there will be an awards ceremony, food, entertainment, music, fun and games. Before the parade, the Templeton Fire Department will hold its annual pancake breakfast from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Tickets are $4 a person or $1 for children under 10. Santa Margarita will hold its annual Fourth of July celebration on July 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Community members are encouraged to decorate bikes and wagons in red, white and blue and join the parade down H Street. Saturday, July 7

North County Dachshund Club meets on the first Saturday of each month at Vineyard Dog Park in Templeton from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The group is made up of dachshund lovers/owners who get together and let us and their dachshunds meet new friends. Those interested may email tmckibben95@gmail.com. There is no cost to join the group; however, it costs $1 to access the dog park.



The Creston Community Association’s POOL-ooza Party will be held on July 7 at 5 p.m. at the Loading Chute’s barn in Creston. Dinner, games, raffles, music and dancing will be available for $20 each or $45 for a family ticket, which may be purchased at the door. VIP tables for eight will be available for $250 each. The city of Atascadero will host its summer concert series July 7 through Aug. 11 at Atascadero Lake Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Pacific Harvest Catering will have gourmet barbecue for purchase. On July 7, the Jammies will perform.



The Atascadero High School all-class meet and greet barbecue public event will be held on July 7 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Atascadero Lake Park. The event is open to anyone has ever attended AHS. Attendees are invited to bring their families and friends. The cost is $10 each for the meal of chicken, salad, beans and garlic bread. The event will be catered by Scotty’s BBQ; Scotty graduated in 1982. Bring beverages, lawn chairs and nametags. Look for the Atascadero Greyhound banner and orange and white balloons. The San Luis Obispo County Optimist Clubs will hold its annual Kids Fishing Derby on July 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Santa Margarita Lake. For more information, call Del Bishop at 238-0071 or Jerry Tanimoto at 466-9822.



Tuesday, July 10

The Atascadero City Council will hold its regular meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6 p.m. in the Atascadero City Hall Council Chambers. For more information, call 461-5000 or go to www.atascadero.org. The meeting can be viewed on the city’s website, on Charter Cable Channel 20 or on KPRL AM1230.



The Atascadero library will host Evening Storyfest for Families will take place on Tuesdays from July 10 to 31 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles are invited to bring their youngsters to a fun-filled evening. Each session will feature a special guest appearance. All are welcome to come in PJs and to bring a stuffed cuddly toy or “blankee.” Storyfest is free to the public.



The Atascadero Chamber of Commerce will host Tuesday Evenings at the Lake from June 19 through Aug. 28. The Atascadero Elks barbecue crew prepares the meals that are hosted by various community organizations. Barbecued chicken and sirloin with beans, bread, salad and beverage is served from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by the Atascadero Community Band performing free “Big Band” concerts from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Lake Park Bandstand. Tickets are available at the event or from any member of an organization that’s hosting a barbecue, or call the Chamber office at 466-2044 for additional information. Tickets are $12 each for those 12 and older, seniors 60 and over are $10 each and children 11 and under are $6. Takeout will be available.The hosts of the July 10 event are Atascadero Christian Home and Atascadero Elks Lodge.



Wednesday, July 11

County Supervisor Jim Patterson will be available in the Santa Margarita Library, 9630 Murphy Ave., the second Wednesday of each month from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend the open hours to talk with the supervisor.



A food distribution is held at the Atascadero Grange Hall, 5035 Palma Ave., for seniors 60 and over on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. To qualify one person must have a monthly income of $1,381 or less, for two persons $1,839 and progressively higher for three and more.



Concerts in the Templeton Park are held each Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. through Aug. 22. The concert is free and open to the public. Food will be sold by Templeton Market and Deli. Attendees are recommended to bring a blanket or low-back chair. No dogs are allowed for sanitary and safety reasons. On July 11, Narrow Road Band will perform.



Thursday, July 12

Twin Cities Community Hospital holds Prenatal Breastfeeding on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Founder’s Pavilion, 1100 Las Tablas Road in Templeton. All classes are free.



Friday, July 13

The Paddock Players presents puppet shows at the Charles Paddock Zoo the second Saturday of each month at 11 a.m., as weather permits. The shows feature animal tales that include fuzzy, furry and feathered puppets. The puppet shows are free with zoo admission.

A Sign to Song class is held at the Colony Park Community Center, 5599 Traffic Way, on Mondays from 10 to 11 a.m. The class is a fun way to learn sign language by signing along with music. The class is free and is for adults 50-plus. Twin Cities Community Hospital holds Newborn and Parents Support Group every Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Founder’s Pavilion, 1100 Las Tablas Road in Templeton. All classes are free.



TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), an international nonprofit weight loss support group, meets in the basement room of the Atascadero Community Church United Church of Christ, 5850 Rosario Ave., on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. Call 466-1697 or 462-2227 for more information.

Families Anonymous now meets every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at North County Connection, 8600 Atascadero Ave., Atascadero. The meetings are free and open to those who are concerned about the use of mind-altering substances, alcohol, drugs or behavior problems. For more information, call 462-8600.
