AAUW hosting Mardi Gras fundrasier

Posted: Friday, Feb 17th, 2017

ATASCADERO — Atascadero’s fifth annual American Association of University Women (AAUW) Mardi Gras celebration and fundraiser event is set to return Tuesday, Feb. 28.

The event, hosted by the AAUW, which was established 136 years ago and is by far the largest and oldest organization empowering and raising awareness for women and girls alike, is scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Marriott Springhill Suites, 900 El Camino Real.

“This fundraiser (specifically) is to support the equality and education of local women college graduates, as well as a seventh-grade girls’ science camp,” said Eileen O’Grady of the AAUW Atascadero Branch. “The AAUW Atascadero Branch, with over 100 current members, is the largest local branch. This fundraiser is just another great opportunity for (people of North County) to truly make a difference here locally.”

The Mardi Gras fundraiser, which is essentially the AAUW Atascadero Branch’s signature annual event, will feature a night of exquisite Cajun dinner, dancing to a live musical performance by local artist Burning James and the Funky Flames Band, prizes for group and individual costumes, as well as live and silent auctions that will include several unique and atypical items.

Guests are encouraged to dress in Mardi Gras attire, O’Grady said.

Overall, this fundraiser is the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in getting involved or simply supporting these women’s issues locally. Through various broad-based advocacy, education, philanthropy and research efforts, members of the Paso Robles community can help address both national and local women’s education, employment and public services issues.

Tickets to the event, which cost $80 per person, can be bought from Liz Helgerson by contacting her at 805-462-9221 or For other event questions, contact Marguerite Pulley at 805-464-0906.
