Elite discus thrower Ralph Friguglietti set a new American record for the masters 50-59 age group at the July 14 All-Comers Meet.
His throw of 179-6 is 11 inches farther than the old record. The new record is awaiting certification.
In addition to the seven-day-a-week training Fruguglietti does between weights and throwing in his home city of Bakersfield, the All-Comers Meets at Atascadero High School have been a big help to his training.
“These are great,” he said. “More than anything, you need the repetition of competition and they don’t have a lot of the masters meets. I’m training for Worlds — worlds are in Sacramento this year.”
The All-Comers Meets also have high-schoolers and college-age throwers, which helps keep Fruguglietti focused during the competition.
