STORM WATCH: Multiple accidents reported on Highway 101; powerful storm expected to hit this afternoon

Modified: Friday, Feb 17th, 2017

NORTH COUNTY As the first wave of a storm hits the region the North County has already taken a beating with several vehicle accidents being reported on Highway 101 and there's a possibility of damaging winds and several more inches of rain as the main portion of the storm hits this afternoon and evening.

The California Highway Patrol reported a vehicle collision on northbound Highway 101 near the Monterey County line at 7:17 a.m. The accident involved a single vehicle that rolled over.

CHP reported at 7:54 a.m. that a grey older model sedan had spun out and hit the guardrail in the northbound lanes of 101, just north of the Santa Margarita exit.

At 8:32 a.m. CHP reported another accident just north of the Santa Margarita exit on Highway 101.

A crash was also reported near the Traffic Way exit of Highway 101 in Atascadero, but police investigated and were not able to locate any crashed vehicles.

According to PG&E meteorologist John Lindsey, a powerful 983 millibar storm will hit the Central Coast this afternoon and evening, tied to a large plume of subtropical moisture that extends to the Hawaiian Islands, creating an "atmospheric river" condition. The storm is explicated to produce moderate gale-force to fresh gale-force (32 to 46 mph) winds and gusts up to 60 mph.

According to Lindsey, the storm is expected to turn to scattered showers by Saturday morning and end by Saturday afternoon.

Lindsey is predicting rainfall to total approximately 2.25 to 3.5 inches from today to Saturday morning.

Rains and gale-force winds are expected to return Sunday evening and last until Wednesday.
