ATASCADERO — After receiving 73 calls in the last year and a half about people scavenging through solid waste recepticles, the Atascadero Police Department proposed an anti-scavenging ordinance that would prohibit scavenging by unauthorized individuals in the city of Atascadero.
The Atascadero City Council was presented with the proposed ordinance. Police Chief Jerel Haley said the concerns with scavenging are safety of the residents, trash and debris left by scavengers and identity theft.
“We are hopeful that by passing this language, we would be discouraging the act in the first place,” Haley said. “We don’t want people to feel they aren’t safe in their own homes.”
