ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Mutual Water Company board of directors passed raising water rates at its April 3 meeting. The new rates will be effective on Wednesday, April 18.
According to AMWC General Manager John Neil, the rate increase is needed to “cover the increased expenses associated with the operation, maintenance, rehabilitation, and improvement of aging facilities; ensure continued compliance with present and future state and federal regulations; reliably meet water supply and treatment needs; and cover AMWC’s share of the operations and maintenance costs of the Nacimiento Water Project.”
In addition to the water rate increase, the board adopted a $2.50 per meter per month surcharge. The surcharge is required to generate the revenue needed for AMWC to meet its financial obligations under the Nacimiento Water Project bond, Neil said. He said that the continuing sluggish economy has resulted in a significant reduction in connection fee revenue; the source of revenue that AMWC had intended to use to pay for the NWP. The surcharge will be eliminated once new meter sales increase to the level needed to pay the debt service on the NWP bond.
