Zoo residents celebrate Halloween early

Posted: Friday, Oct 29th, 2010

Heather Young/Atascadero News The meerkats at Charles Paddock Zoo enjoy a treat of crickets placed inside a carved pumpkin at Charles Paddock Zoo on Wednesday.

The residents of Charles Paddock Zoo will play hosts to hundreds of local children for the zoo’s 17th annual Zoo Boo, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

The yearly event includes games, safe trick or treating, viewing the exhibits and more. Zoo Director Alan Baker said some of the animals could receive carved pumpkins filled with special treats during the event if there are enough pumpkins.

Last year’s Zoo Boo brought in more than 1,000 people to its one-day event, Baker said.

“It’s a great place for my kids to be in a safe environment,” said Carey Gelos of Paso Robles, who has attended five years in a row.

Sofia Gelos, 5, of Paso said her favorite part of the 2009 Zoo Boo was “the lions. The tigers.”

Last year, the zoo introduced its vegetable-decorating contest, which will be held this year as well.

The contest will be divided into different age categories. Entries can be carved or decorated vegetables.
